Galapagos – snorkeling, turtles, blue footed boobies..

Hi!

So yesterday a friend of David, J, told me he was going to the Grietas today with his two kids.. and asked if I wanted to join, which I did. I think he is the same age as David, so he is 29ish, and I thought his kids would be like 2-3 years or something… but no, they are 12 and 8 years old! Haha. he was 17 when he got his daughter. People here generally are much younger when they get married and have kids, but still it was surprising, haha.
It’s quite difficult to get to las Grietas, the terrain are just stones which you have to jump between, haha. But it’s worth it. Grietas is like a lake between 2 big rocks, a mix of salt and fresh water, and the water is really cold and refreshing!! And crystal clear too!

At the Grietas I also met the german-austrian-couple from the boat tour the first day, haha.

On our way back we stayed at Playa de los alemanes again and did snorkel but much more further away from the shore, like 200 metres or something. We saw a sea turtle and blue footed boobies :)

Snorkeling at playa alemanes. The fishes usually run away but this one liked the camera. :)

At the beach I also started talking to a guide who is friends with J he was there with a group of passengers from a cruise, and they were going to the highlands to visit a farm where they have land turtles.. and asked me if I wanted to join, free of charge… Of course!! Haha.

So I went on the bus with them and I got some guided information.. the guide is also born here in Santa Cruz, and he told us that when he was young it was only around 1000 people here in the island of santa cruz, now its about 20.000. To much people, very different… Now they have regulations, only 3 months stay maximum on the islands, even for Ecuadorians, they can’t just come and live here. Lots of Ecuadorians wants to come to live here because everyone here has job and earns much more money then the others, but it’s also more expensive to live here, they have many regulations, for example they can’t buy a car if they need one, only if they exchange it for an older one. And if you don’t have an old car, you have to buy one, and it can cost you as much as to buy a new one.. plus the transportation of it and the papers you need for it… so instead of 20000 usd for a new car, it will cost you 40-50000 usd…

Oh, by they way, when the spanish arrived they saw so many turtles that they called it the island of the galápagos, and galápago is the shell of the turtle in an old spanish.. interesting!

On the tour I started to talk to a girl, and we spoke in english a lot, until I asked where she was from, and she answered ”Sweden”, haha! So we started talk in swedish, and wow, it’s such a weird feeling in the mouth to speak swedish again! Haha. The habit disappears so quickly. When we got back I helped her to get her laundry done and then we went looking for a dive to the gordons rock for tomorrow.. we found a place that seemed reliable and talked a lot about safety. Since I’m new, and Lotti (the girl) hasn’t dived in 10 years, they would have an extra assistant just for us… still same price, 120 USD (yes, diving is more expensive here).

I had the thought of going out dancing tonight, but since we are leaving at 7 am tomorrow, it will be an early night for me.

My computer is full already!! Ahhhh… I can’t put the photos from today on the computer!! O I have put all the videos on usb-sticks and erase them from the computer, and I watched the videos from holbox…. oh, I miss it so much… and I miss Duilio….
