Have you ever evaluated yourself?

A performance appraisal (PA) or performance evaluation is a systematic and periodic process that assesses an individual employee’s job performance and productivity in relation to certain pre-established criteria and organizational objectives”- Wikipedia

I’m sure you had a performance appraisals/evaluations with your work or school. You evaluate your accomplishments, potential for future improvement, strengths and weaknesses.

Recently I lost a good friend of mine, and when this bad things happens, it always changes you. I started to think about my life situation, would I be satisfied if I died tomorrow?  Am I living the life I want? The answer is no.

I did take a minute to think about what I’ve accomplished in my life, and the result was just not enough. I’m not at all where I pictured myself many many years ago. (The 18-year old Sofia would be sooooo disappointed with the soon to be 25-years old Sofia..)

Have you ever evaluated yourself?

Take a minute to picture what you would like to be doing right now. Like exactly in this moment. What do you see? Do you see yourself lying on a beach having a cold drink, do you see yourself celebrating that you won the Pulitzer Prize or do you see yourself holding your newborn baby? Depending on what you answer, you see what you think it’s important for you right now. You should be doing what gets you in that direction. If you are working 24/7 and dreaming about getting a promotion or an work-related award, then, good for you! But if you are working 24/7 and picturing yourself Scuba diving in the Galapagos islands, then think twice if life it’s getting you where you want.

We do very often forget our selves in our normal busy lives, we forget what we really want to achieve and do in life. I think everyone should have a personal self appraisal with themselves from time to time.

Make a list of accomplishments, goals you want to achieve, things you want to improve on. Where do you picture yourself in 1 year? 5 years? 10 years?
You could even write yourself a letter that you are not allowed to open until a year from now.

In mine it would say:

”Hi Sofia,
I hope that you have done everything you wanted to do in South America, that you have improved your Spanish so that you now can speak easily and with slang. I hope you have bungy jumped, that you have learned to surf and have taken a dive-certification. I hope that you have got better self-esteem and lot’s of new friends over the world.
I also hope that you have given a thought about what’s next in your life and decided what to do to get where you picture yourself in the future. You can’t live like you have done the past years, with an income that doesn’t cover your fix expenses. You have to choose something that you really love doing, and get paid for it. You can’t have so much going on at the same time, you have to focus and start getting to your goals. But if you still want to do what you do today, a little bit of everything you like, you won’t really get anywhere, and you will not get paid good enough, so forget about going out traveling again some time soon. Think wisely about your future. Do you still want to travel or is it your time for a career or for family? (Please say travel!)
I also hope that you have learned to speak French. And I hope that you didn’t put all the weight back while traveling, I hope you have been working out and that you are still eating healthy and not too much chocolate. Think about how much you have worked for getting rid of those extra 18 kilos. Bisous, Sofia”
